Countering Back Pain with a New Mattress

There is nothing worse than suffering from back pain; in some cases, it can get to the point where the affected individual considers extreme measures to numb the pain. Paul Davis suffered chronic back pain that left him so sore that he went to extreme measures to try to alleviate it; he decided that the only way to stop feeling the pain would be to shoot himself in the back! But instead of receiving help, he was handed a three-year jail term instead.

Extreme Back Pain

Forty-four-year-old Paul Davis from Sidcup in Kentwas suffering from such severe back pain that he thought the only option was to shoot himself in the back to try to paralyse himself to numb the pain. In April, he was found on his sofa after the second attempt at shooting himself did not work as the weapon had jammed. All he managed to do is make the back pain even worse than before because of the gunshot wound; as you might imagine, he is seriously struggling now.

Unusual and Tragic

Bizarrely, instead of receiving help for his problem, Davis was sentenced to three years in prison for possession of a firearm. Mr Justice Haddon-Cave told London’s Appeal Court, “The reasons for him shooting himself were extremely unusual and tragic. Remarkably, he decided to shoot himself in the spine to paralyse himself and try to stop that pain. He fetched the gun, shot himself in the lower back, and then tried to reload for a second shot, but the gun jammed. But the injury appears only to have caused more nerve damage and to have exacerbated his condition.”

Mr Davis’ barrister pleaded with the judges to ‘show mercy’ and insisted that her client was ‘in despair’ at the time of the shooting. The judge quashed the three-year jail term and instead imposed a two-year suspended sentence, adding, “This is a wholly exceptional and tragic case, which calls for mercy.”

New Link Between Back Pain and Falling in Older Men

Back pain is something that affects millions of people around the world at one time or another, and it can be extremely uncomfortable. And many of these individuals would do anything to rid themselves of the pain and ensure that they can lead a happy, comfortable life without it. This is why many look at orthopaedic and memory foam mattresses when it comes time to purchase a new one.

New Link Between Back Pain and Falling in Older Men

Risk Factor

According to recent studies, back pain is the most commonly found pain in older men; this could mean that these men are at greater risk of falling and injuring themselves. Lead author and associate professor at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Lynn Marshall, explained, “We know that older people with back pain have poor physical function, like lower strength and difficulty rising from a chair.”

She went on, “Pain is not thought of as a traditional fall risk factor, but our study showed that back pain is a risk factor for falls among older men.”

The report studied approximately 6,000 males over the age of 65 who lived at home. Between the years 2000 and 2002, these men were surveyed about back pain and were asked if they had had this problem over the previous twelve months; if so, they were asked how severe and intense the pain was, how often did it occur and where in the back was the pain. Over the next year, the men were tasked with logging whether they had fallen and how many times. Over two-thirds of the men revealed that they suffered from back pain in the original survey, with 62 per cent experiencing lower back pain. During the next year, 1,388 of the almost-6,000 men said that they had fallen at least once while 632 men had fallen on more than one occasion.

It is often the case that back pain can be the result of a poor mattress. If you are experiencing back pain and believe a new bed or mattress could be the solution, then Beds Glasgow can help. Back Pain in Younger People

For a lot of people, nothing is more important than a good night’s sleep; it rejuvenates the body after a long and stressful day. However, more and more of the younger generations are suffering from back pain due to a sedentary lifestyle and bad posture; this is causing many issues when they try to get comfortable at night.

Back Pain in Younger People

Sedentary Lifestyle and Bad Posture

Private healthcare group Bupa have complied a list of data from over 60,000 medical procedures in 2015 and found that those in their 20s and 30s are being treated for a range of problems including back pain that are stereo typically associated with old age. The data has shown that, in most cases, a sedentary lifestyle and bad posture are to blame for issues such as back pain.

Bupa also found that treatment that would usually be offered to older people was increasing in younger people, aged primarily between 25 and 45. Experts have warned that because these individuals are continually hunching over their mobile phones and other devices, along with sitting at a desk for lengthy periods of time, there is a corresponding rise in back and neck pain.

In a survey conducted by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), 45 per cent of respondents aged 16 to 24 admitted to suffering from back or neck pain, compared to just 28 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds who were asked the same question the year before. BCA chiropractorTim Hutchfulsaid that he was “concerned that the number of patients under the age of 30 coming through our doors is increasing”.

He then added, “When people use laptops or mobile phones in bed, they tend to forget their posture, hunch over the screen and leave their spine unsupported, which can damage posture and cause back or neck pain.”

When it comes to back pain, an orthopaedic mattress helps alleviate some of the discomfort; if you are suffering from back pain, like many of the individuals from the surveys mentioned above, contact us here at Beds Glasgow. We have a fantastic range of beds for all situations and circumstances.
